The Pride Library: Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Temporary Closure
Published on June 03, 2026
Founded in 1997 by Dr. James Miller and located in The D.B. Weldon Library since 2005, the Pride Library holds the distinction of being the first LGBTQ+ research centre recognized at a Canadian university. Until recently, the Pride Library operated independently from Western Libraries. On May 1, 2026, it was formally welcomed into Western Libraries, ensuring its continuity as a dedicated space for queer exploration and discovery and the preservation of its rich collections.
The Pride Library will remain in its current home on the first floor of Weldon. The temporary closure described below supports the transition into Western Libraries. The space itself is not moving or closing permanently.
How long will the library be closed and when will it reopen?
The Pride Library will be closed for the 2026 Summer term and is expected to reopen in the fall.
Why is the Pride Library temporarily closed?
Transitioning the Pride Library into Western Libraries includes inventorying and securing the collection — ephemeral materials, artwork, serials, archival records, and books — to ensure everything is properly accounted for and protected. This work requires dedicated, uninterrupted access to the space by Western Libraries staff throughout the summer.
Can I still access Pride Library materials while the space is closed?
Yes. Catalogued material is available to search and request through Omni, the library's online catalogue. For uncatalogued books, you can submit a request by contacting library@uwo.ca. Archival materials are available by appointment. Please contact archives.services@uwo.ca to arrange access.
Are collections being dispersed or moved to other parts of the library system?
Archival collections are already housed in Archives and Special Collections and will remain accessible. Circulating materials will remain in the Pride Library space. Much of the rare and special materials will also remain in the Pride Library space, but some items may require different storage conditions and may be moved to Archives and Special Collections.
I have a general question about the Pride Library. Who do I contact?
General questions and inquiries can be directed to libadmin@uwo.ca.
