Access to Items via HathiTrust ETAS Ends in August
Published on July 27, 2021
In early 2021, due to the pandemic restricting circulation of Western Libraries physical books, we implemented HathiTrust’s emergency temporary access service (ETAS) to provide access to digitized print materials that would normally be unavailable for online use due to copyright.
As we look to a full return to campus this fall and the reopening of our locations, Western Libraries is discontinuing ETAS, which ends access to these digitized copyrighted items and re-establishes more fulsome physical collections use. The process to remove ETAS links from the online catalogue begins August 18 and is expected to wrap up August 23.
You can arrange for physical materials through Western Libraries’ no-contact pickup and print collections can be requested for pick up at our other library locations or the Affiliated University College Libraries. We also remain HathiTrust members after ETAS ends: visit the HathiTrust digital library for primary sources including rare government documents, newspapers, photographs, and maps.
Additionally, appointment-based access to Weldon Library general collections stacks launches in September. Appointments to access archival materials, special collections, and maps begin August 10 and are available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Email to request an appointment, providing 48 hours’ notice of your preferred appointment day/time.
If you have any questions about the ETAS discontinuation, please email Bobby Glushko, Associate Chief Librarian.
