Using HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS)
Western Libraries is a member of HathiTrust, a digital database that allows its members access to millions of volumes in the public domain. As part of our HathiTrust membership, Western Libraries has signed on to their Emergency Temporary Access Service (HathiTrust ETAS) to provide the broadest access possible to materials.
HathiTrust ETAS increases remote access at a time when physical collections are inaccessible and students and faculty are mainly working off-campus due to COVID-19 restrictions. The service provides access to in-copyright, digitized materials that are part of Western Libraries’ print collection and would normally be restricted from online viewing due to copyright. These items can be accessed through our Omni search tool and appear as “Temporary Access.”
“Temporary Access” items can only be read online – you cannot download or print them. To ensure we follow copyright law, “Temporary Access” items can only be accessed on a 1-to-1 basis. This means if Western Libraries has one physical copy of an item, only one person can view its digital version it at a time; if we own two physical copies of an item, two users can access the digital item at the same time, and so on. Copyright law also requires that physical copies remain unavailable for as long as Western Libraries subscribes to HathiTrust ETAS.

Once you’ve entered a search query for a title, author, resource type, or other option within the Advanced Search feature and select the record you want to review or borrow through HathiTrust ETAS:
- Click on the “HathiTrust ETAS” link (outlined in red).
- Sign in using your Western ID. You will be taken to a HathiTrust records page once logged in.
- Click “Temporary Access” (outlined in red).
- Click “Check Out” (outlined in red). This item is now yours for 1 hour. Your item will automatically renew as long as you are still using it (i.e., do not leave or refresh the page).
