Access to the Canadian Tire Heritage Collection
Open Access Materials
Access for the purpose of public research and examination will be granted on an unrestricted basis to the following Canadian Tire Heritage Collection materials:
- Audio-visual commercials*
- Canadian Tire ‘money'
- Catalogues
- Flyers
- Newsletters
- Press clippings
- Public annual reports
- Photographs
- Store plans and drawings
- Public corporate documents (eg, letters, patents, corporate by-laws, shareholder lists, etc)
- Public financial statements (consolidated and subsidiaries)
*Requests for access to the commercials must be submitted to the archivist responsible for the Collection at least three weeks in advance so that appropriate viewing arrangements can be made. Depending on the specific format, this may entail consultation elsewhere on campus. Requests must include the title and number of each item (as listed in the finding aid) as well as a list of proposed visit dates and times (i.e. morning, afternoon, all day). The archivist will confirm the viewing arrangements, including specific dates when the items can be accessed, and will provide an estimate as to the amount of time required to view and rewind the materials.
Access to Other Records
Textual Records
Anyone seeking access to textual records other than those listed above must submit a written request addressed to the University Archivist (email is acceptable). This request must identify clearly what materials are being requested and also indicate:
- the nature and scope of the research
- the need for access to the specific identified materials, and
- the intended use of the information
The University Archivist will review the request, seek clarification as necessary, and then forward it, along with any additional comments deemed relevant, to Canadian Tire for review. Canadian Tire's access decision will be communicated as soon as it is received. Depending on the nature and amount of material sought, as well as the time of year, this process can take time and so it is recommended that researchers allow at least four weeks for this review to take place.
Audio-Visual Materials - General Series
Anyone seeking access to the materials in this series must submit a written request addressed to the University Archivist, following the same process as outlined above for the textual records.
If approval is received from Canadian Tire, the archivist responsible for the Collection will make arrangements for viewing. Depending on the specific format, this may entail consultation elsewhere on campus. To facilitate this, available dates and times (i.e. morning, afternoon, all day) must be provided to the archivist once it is known that access is approved. As noted above, this should be done at least three weeks in advance of any planned visit. The archivist will confirm the viewing arrangements, including specific dates when the items can be accessed, and will provide an estimate as to the amount of time required to view and rewind the materials.
